1974 was the last year that Flower Day was held in conjunction with the Adelaide Festival of Arts. 'One of my most unpopular moves, after the 1974 festival at which it had been a bit of a fizzer, was to bring to an end Flower Day, the community event that had opened each festival and in its heyday had evidently been rather a magnificent affair. To my mind, though, it suffered from two serious defects: its format was entirely predictable and it had no professional guiding hand.
