Summary

A carte de visite showing a broadside view of a three masted ship at Port Adelaide, with a second ship in the near background on HC Fletcher's 2nd ('Dunnikier') Slip at Birkenhead which was first used in 1867; dated about 1867-1872. Historical information

" ... The Art Gallery of SA has the research efforts of the photohistorian Robert Noye on its website. The lengthy and informative reference to Schourup indicates that he was born in Denmark in 1837 and by the time he emigrated to South Australia in 1862 he was an accomplished artist and cartographer who had trained at the Royal Academy of Arts at Copenhagen. 'It seems likely that Peter Schourup learnt the art of photography from his benevolent friend Professor [sic] Robert Hall [a pioneering photographer, active in Adelaide from the mid-1840s], as on his arrival he was demonstrating his skill as an artist but by the end of the year was practising photography'. He was active in Port Adelaide for some 20 years until he left for NZ, where he died aged 49 in 1887. Noye states that 'What are presumed to be Schourup's first cartes de visite' carry the above printed credit. We would like to suggest that not only is the second item offered here a photograph by Schourup, but that it is also of a painting by Schourup. The usually dependable 'Dictionary of Australian Artists. Painters, Sketchers, Photographers and Engravers to 1870', merely has this to say: 'Schourup, P., professional photographer, worked at Port Adelaide, South Australia, in about 1867-72'".
