Summary

A small photo album compiled by Thomas Chappell and containing photographs from his time serving in the Middle East. Each image has a brief caption: many show military activities - vehicles such as trucks, tanks and horse-drawn carriages; prisoners of war; guns; captured planes; donkeys, mules and camels used for transportation; servicemen and army camps. There are also quite a few of the people, scenery and buildings in the Middle East. See items for details of individual images.

Historical information

Nineteen year old Thomas Chappell, eldest child of John and Alma Chappell, enlisted in Adelaide on 10 December 1917. He left Australia from Sydney aboard H.T. 'Port Darwin' and disembarked at the Suez on 7 June 1918. He was assigned as a driver for the Australian Mounted Division Train, but appears to have been unwell for much of the time, and returned to Australia aboard the 'Burma', arriving on 27 August 1919. He subsequently married Louisa Catt in 1925.
