Summary

View looking east along Rundle Street, from King William Street, dated between 1865 and 1868. The premises of Sawtell's watchmaker & jeweller business, and Osborne and Smith are clearly visible. It is noticeable that the north facing buildings have verandahs, while none of the south facing ones do.

General notes

The Library holds three photograph albums, all titled 'Duryea's Adelaide Album'. While there is a degree of overlap in relation to the photographs included in the volumes (the panorama is included in all three), each is different to some extent. The other albums can be found at B 73122 [version 1] and B 73319 [version 2].

Historical information

New York-born Townsend Duryea (1823-1888) emigrated to Australia (Melbourne) in 1852, and commenced work as a photographer the following year. In 1855, he relocated his studio to Adelaide; by the early 1870s he was a well known photographer, particularly for his panoramas. His work won many prizes in the Society of Arts photographic competitions. He was appointed the official photographer for the Duke of Edinburgh's visit, travelling with the entourage. Duryea's studio was destroyed by a fire in 1875.
