Summary

Etching on cotton rag paper titled 'Adelaide', by Joseph Christian Goodhart. The print depicts a view of King William Street looking South, with trams on the line, cars parked at the curb and driving on the street, and people walking on the footpaths. Adelaide Town Hall is in view further along the street. The T&G Building was opened in November 1925 and it appears a crane is adding soem finishing touches to the building. The artwork is numbered 'edtn [edition] 60', titled and signed by the artist.

Historical information

Joseph Goodhart was a painter, pastellist, and etcher, who had no formal training as an artist but was a draper by trade. He worked in oils, watercolours and pastels until he was 50 years old, when a meeting with John Goodchild resulted in him taking up etching. Goodhart set up his first press in his fitting shop in Broken Hill. Many of his works depict mining life around Broken Hill between the 1920s and early 1930s, while others record historical landmarks of Tasmania.
