Historical information

Service Number 1902, Corporal George Alexander Chesney was born in Portglenone, Ireland, in March 1889. He enlisted at Keswick, South Australia, on 19 May 1915. A member of the 3rd Reinforcements, 27th Infantry Battalion, he served at Gallipoli where he was wounded in action on 10 November 1915 when he received a gun shot wound to the wrist. While serving in France he was wounded in action a second time on 4 August 1916 when he received multiple gun shot wounds to the head and back. He returned to Australia in 1918. He married Christina Atkinson at Berri, South Australia, on 15 September 1926. George died at Glenside on 9 July 1959.
