Summary

Drawing of an early settler's cottage located on the south western corner of present day South Road and Richmond Road, Marleston. The pre-fabricated house was Henry Manning design. The inscription under the photographic copy read 'The late Mr Donald McLean and Family arrived in S.A. in 1837. He at once sent his eldest son to Tasmania for Seed Wheat, Bullocks, etc., Drays and Horses. He was granted Section No. 50, containing 80 acres, near Hilton, on 6th June, 1838, at the first Land Meeting held for same in S.A. He cropped 20 acres with wheat in 1838. This was the very first wheat grown in S.A., and was never disputed. The house shown here was his first residence erected on his land. The above facts have been collected by Mr Donald H. McLean, eldest son of the late John McLean, and grandson of the above, and this picture [copy print] is presented by him to the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia' [in 1923]. The original charcoal drawing of the house was donated to the State Library of South Australia by another McLean descendant in 2019.
