Summary

Aboriginal mother with a baby on her back. Sweet Adelaide 466. Another copy is at PRG 1258/2/2026 where it has the information, 'Portrait of an Aboriginal woman 'Teenminnie', in profile, carrying her small child on her back, both wrapped in a kangaroo skin cloak, and she has a walking stick. Photographer was probably Captain Samuel Sweet and the location was probably in Point McLeay Region. A later caption provides the name 'Narahminyerie'. She was the first Aboriginal woman convert to Christianity'

Historical information

Captain Samuel White Sweet (1825-1886) was sea captain, surveyor and photographer. In January 1869 Sweet took command of the two-masted schooner Gulnare, making several supply trips between Adelaide and Darwin. In September he photographed the official party at the planting of the first pole of the overland telegraph; he also took pictures of the township, the men at work and forest scenery. In November he sailed to the Roper River and took part in the survey there. When he retired from the sea he opened a photographic studio in Adelaide and concentrated on landscapes. With his horse-drawn dark room he travelled through South Australia taking hundreds of pictures of the outback, stations and homesteads. He was the colony's foremost documentary photographer of the 1870s and early 1880s.
