Summary

Photographic reproductions of earlier photographs of a farm and homestead. These photographs may be of Buckland Park near Port Gawler. Photographs 3 & 5 show extensive, recently planted orchards and gardens, with beds and paths laid out. Family members are pictured in photographs 2 & 3. Photograph 6 shows a very large gum tree, with a man standing at the base. Photograph 7 shows a fenced paddock with tall gum trees, and a herd of cows in the distance, possibly at Buckland Park

Historical information

Captain Samuel White Sweet (1825-1886) was sea captain, surveyor and photographer. In January 1869 Sweet took command of the two-masted schooner Gulnare, making several supply trips between Adelaide and Darwin. In September he photographed the official party at the planting of the first pole of the overland telegraph; he also took pictures of the township, the men at work and forest scenery. In November he sailed to the Roper River and took part in the survey there. When he retired from the sea he opened a photographic studio in Adelaide and concentrated on landscapes. With his horse-drawn dark room he travelled through South Australia taking hundreds of pictures of the outback, stations and homesteads. He was the colony's foremost documentary photographer of the 1870s and early 1880s.
