Historical information

William James Isbister was a son of William Isbister and Jane, nee Linklater. W.J. Isbister's father was born in Glasgow in 1829. He was a shipping agent and part owner of the 'Admella'. On 7 November 1857 he set sail on the maiden voyage of the 'Admella' from Rothesay, Scotland, arriving in Adelaide on 17 March 1858. His sister was married to Captain Hugh MacEwan who was master of the 'Admella' when she was wrecked on Carpenter Rocks in 1859. William Isbister became the Adelaide agent for Captain F. Cadell's Murray River steamers. He was also on the board of the Adelaide Children's Hospital. He and his wife had two sons: William James Isbister, MBE (1866-1950) who became a solicitor, King's Counsel and barrister, and James Linklater Thomson Isbister (1869-1936) a doctor and gynaecologist of Sydney. These five portraits were from the estate of William James Isbister in 1951.
