Historical information

The first Mortlock Shield Carnival was held in Port Lincoln on the King's Birthday weekend of June 27-29 1936. At the conclusion of the final match a composite team was chosen from all participating Leagues. This side, organised by Peter Bampton, played the curtain raiser before the South Australia/Victoria clash on Adelaide Oval later that year. Most of the players in the photograph are also in an Eyre Peninsula team, taken at the same locality, illustrated in '40 Mortlocks: a history of the Mortlock Shield 1938-1988', page 9 (bottom) by John Gascoyne.
