Historical information

Muriel Lilah Matters was born on 12 November 1877 at Bowden, Adelaide; studied music and elocution; lived in Sydney and Melbourne; acted with the Robert Brough Comedy Company; returned to Adelaide in 1901 and continued to act; was influenced by Europen friends and travelled to London in 1905 to further radical activity; joined the Women's Freedom League in 1907; took the first 'Votes for Women' caravan on a tour of villages in the south of England; on 28 October 1908 chained herself to an iron grille at the House of Commons; was removed and sent to Holloway Prison for a month where she adopted the cause of prison reform; in 1910 returned to Australia to lecture on feminism and socialism; in 1911 in London helped to form a women's settlement to further education opportunities in the Lambeth slums; married a divorced dentist, Dr. William Arnold Porter in 1914; moved to Hastings where she died in 1969.
