Summary

Flinders' Column, Mount Lofty was named and the tablet was unveiled by Lord Tennyson March 22, 1902. The Obelisk had been erected 15 years earlier but was dedicated in 1902. Flinders Column is in honor of Matthew Flinders, Commander of the 'Investigator', who from Kangaroo Head on Kangaroo Island discovered and named Mount Lofty on Tuesday March 23, 1802.
