Historical information

The artist, Henrietta Ilbery (nee Thomas), arrived in South Australia aboard 'Hero' in 1840, together with her mother, infant son William and a Burmese servant, joining her husband James, who had arrived the year before aboard 'James Holmes'. They appear to have cultivated land at North Para from 1841 through to 1946. In 1842 there was an dispute over the ownership of some cattle and James was imprisoned. Sometime in 1842/43 the property passed through the hands of Henrietta's sister Charlotte Thomas into the ownership of William Younghusband (who did not arrive in the colony until 1842 and was married to the eldest Thomas daughter, Louisa).
