Historical information

The Himeji Garden was a gift to Adelaide from its sister city Himeji, Japan in 1982 and is one of the few classical Japanese gardens in Adelaide. It was originally built by Council staff, but in the late 1980's Japanese landscape designer Yoshitaka Kumada made two visits to Adelaide and improved the garden's layout to adhere to traditional principles; the garden is now split into a sansui (mountain and lake garden) and a karesansui (dry rock garden) intended to evoke mountains surrounded by water.
