Historical information

Jessie Carter was born 6 November 1861 in London; full name Jessie Margery Siems, daughter of Charles Siems, engine smith, and Margery Siems nee McLean; arrived in Adelaide on the 'Homsdale' on 27 June 1879 aged 17; travelled on her own and was listed on the passenger list as a laundry maid; married James Carter on 26 July 1881 at St. Paul's, Adelaide; in 1895, while living in Salisbury, was appointed churchwarden of the Virginia Anglican Church (administered from the parish of Salisbury), a role she held until the church was closed in 1910; research suggests this appointment made her the first woman to hold any official position in the Church of England in Australia; she died in Adelaide on 15th February 1941.
