From the 1860s to the 1920s approximately 3,000 Muslim cameleers came to Australia, mainly from the hills and plains of Afghanistan and British India, today's Pakistan; they opened lines of supply, transport and communication between isolated settlements, making the economic development of arid Australia possible.
