Summary

The 'State Survey Mark' placed in Victoria Square, Adelaide. The text of the actual survey mark reads: 'Placed under the joint sponsorship of the S.A. Division of the Institution of Surveyors, Australia and the S.A. Dept. of Lands : This plaque is the reference point for all distances and coordinates in South Australia. It is accurately connected to the Johnston Geodetic Station which is itself the reference point for all coordinates on the continent and lies near the centre of Australia. The position of this point was fixed by satellite-based technology in April 1987'. The smaller plaque in front reads: 'The State Survey Mark. This survey mark was placed on 11th January, 1989, the same day that Surveyor General Colonel William Light placed the first peg for the survey of the City of Adelaide near West Terrace in 1837. Unveiled by the Hon. Susan Lenehan, MP, Minister of Lands, 21 April 1989'.

The survey mark is located in the centre of the northern end of Victoria Square, near the GPO and the intersection of King William Road and Flinders/Franklin Street. It is also the point of departure for 'x kilometres from the GPO' claims.
