General notes

One of 29 views from a Hay family album, probably compiled by William Gosse Hay's wife Mary Violet (nee Williams). The photographs feature family members, including Hay's three sons Alick, William and Andrew, as well as various Williams cousins, aunts and uncles, and various family properties. The family of William Gosse Hay (1875-1945), South Australian novelist, lived at 'Tower House' on Beaumont Common, later moving to 'Nangawooka' near Victor Harbor in 1924. They also built a seaside place at Seacliff. Hay's novels were all historical, set in convict-era Tasmania, hence photos of a visit to Tasmania in 1911, following a breakdown Hay had when his mother and sister were lost at sea aboard the steamer 'Waratah' in July 1909. The original album is now in the Ballieu Library, Melbourne. The other photographs can be located by searching B 69729/1 to B 69729/29 inclusive.
