Summary

View of part of the Accounts Section of the Repatriation Department at 186 Pulteney Street, Adelaide. Val Cusack is to the left of the front pillar, with Mr Brown to her right. Eileen is in front of her, Elizabeth Newman is on Eileen's left; Mr McCreidy is on Elizabeth's left. Mr Burns is sitting behind Elizabeth Newman; Mr Don Dunstan is behind him, with Mr Gilchrist at the back of that row. Mr Moore is seated behind Mr Burns; Glenys is behind the front pillar; and Mr Tomsett is second from the left in the back row.

General notes

Each person in the office was assigned a particular task. Broad sheets were written up by hand, then added up and balanced by the girls on the adding machines. (Both adding machines and type writers can be seen in the photograph.) The files were stored at the back of the room in pigeonholes. Clerks were classified as GR1 or GR2, as were the typists. Only single women were allowed employment in the Public Service; when they married their employment was terminated and they were given a marriage allowance of about 4 weeks pay.
