Historical information

The Mitchell Building, built in 1881, was the first building on the University of Adelaide campus and was renamed in honour of Sir William Mitchell, former Chair of Philosophy and Chancellor of the University; it is one of the few secular Gothic revival buildings in Adelaide and stands as an excellent example of the style. The statue of Sir Thomas Elder stands in front of Elder Hall and was built in 1903 to commemorate the co-founder of Elder, Smith & Co., one of the world's largest wool selling firms.
