General notes

Ernest Alfred Roberts (1868-1913) was born on 21 February 1868 in London, son of John Henry Roberts and Sarah Ann, nee Woodford. In 1893 he stood as an independent Labor candidate for Gladstone in the House of Assembly. Narrowly defeated, he won the seat for Labor in 1896 and 1899. Roberts opposed South Australian troops being sent to the South African War in 1899, but early in 1900, affected by British defeats, he volunteered and served as a lieutenant with the 4th Imperial Bushmen's Contingent. He resigned his seat in 1901 and served in western Transvaal as a captain in mid 1902. He edited the Labor 'Weekly Herald' in 1904-1908 and won the assembly seat of Adelaide in May 1905. He won the Federal seat of Adelaide in 1908 and retained it in 1910 and 1913. He was appointed honorary minister in 1911. On 2 December 1913 only minutes after taking part in a spirited parliamentary debate, he collapsed and died. He was buried in West Terrace cemetery, Adelaide, after a state funeral. On 27 August 1892 at Port Pirie he had married Bridget Marie Collins. He was survived by his wife, son and three daughters.
