The launching of the Eurimbla

The launching of the Eurimbla

The launching of the "Eurimbla" at Osborne in 192, taken from the slips as the ship prepares to enter the water. She was one of the two "Billy Hughes" ships built under contract to the Federal Government just after World War I, the other being the "Erina". The Commonwealth Government's shipbuilding venture was not considered a success and no more ships were built. The yards of Poole and Steele were put to a number of uses such as building gantries, railway rolling stock, dredges and barges for the Harbors Board and the bridge at Murray Bridge. The works were closed down some time before January 1937 when all plant was sold at auction. The property was then taken over by the Harbors Board.
