Summary

Four roomed cottage at 87 Melbourne Street built around 1875 by J.W. Polain, a painter for the Public Building Dept. The cottage was home to the Polain family for many years until a Mr Pischke bought it in 1928. The balcony was about 6 feet above the ground to which steps had been erected. Entering the house by this way, one finds a sitting room and a bedroom on the top floor. A quaint little staircase behind the door leads downwards to a cosy kitchen and dining room. The floor of these two rooms are about five feet below the surface. This area was always cool. See article in The Advertiser, Saturday 27 July 1935, pg.10.
