Boats moored at American River on Kangaroo Island. Dinghies on the beach. According to a researcher, the photograph shows two trading vessels at the old American River T Head jetty. The closest vessel is the three mast schooner "Coomonderry", the outside vessel is the three mast schooner "Coringle". The T Head jetty was demolished and replaced by the current sheet pile wharf in 1965. Both vessels were in the ketch trade to American River from Port Adelaide, and were owned by R Fricker & Co, Port Adelaide. They carried superphosphate, general cargo, fuel in drums, livestock, farm machinery and cars to KI, and returned with bulk gypsum, wool, livestock, cars and farm machinery to Port Adelaide. The trade finished in 1982, and was the last port the ketches called into after 150 years of trading around South Australia.
