Summary

ALBUM: A collection of 110 photographs taken during World War I in the Middle East by a German photographer, name not known, who was eventually captured by the Australian 3rd Light Horse; topics include military forces from Germany, Turkey, Great Britain and Australia, the indigenous people, buildings, and landscapes. The captions have been copied from those that were written on the original lantern slides.

Contents include: 12.Executed men hanging outside the Jaffa Gate, Old Jerusalem, during the Ottoman Empire, surrounded by Turkish soldiers; 37.Soldiers at Jaffa Gate, Old Jerusalem; 36.Jaffa Gate, Old Jerusalem.

Historical information

This collection was originally in the care of Jack Kaines who served as a dispatch rider in France during World War I and had his motorcycle shot from under him about eight times; he founded the Birdwood Mill Museum in South Australia during the early nineteen sixties and died in 1975. A photocopy of his poem: 'The voice of the bursting shell' is filed in the album of photoprints.
