Summary

GENERAL: Frederick Elliott Randell, his wife Caroline and children Keith, who is riding a rocking horse, and Dorothy, photographed in a garden at Hyde Park, (Adelaide) by George Beauchamp on 8 May 1903. They are described as being the 'first S.A. residents in Zion City'. (They left Sydney for British Columbia, Canada ten days later.).

Historical information

John Alexander Dowie founded Zion City in the United States and visited Adelaide several times; about 50 of his South Australian supporters moved to America and took up residence in Zion City. A researcher has added the following information: The young boy is Keith Montgomery Randell, who was born in Mannum in 1892. The parents are Frederick Elliott Randell, born Mannum 1863 and Martha Caroline (Carrie) McKirdy, born Auburn, SA 1862. Frederick Elliott Randell was the brother of William Richard Randell and assisted him in establishing a steamship line on the Murray River. Frederick Elliott Randell and his family moved to Zion, Illinois, a small town north of Chicago, arriving on 14 June 1903, along with Martha's brother Charlie McKirdy and others in the family. They were all members of the Christian Catholic Church aka the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church, which was founded by John Alexander Dowie of South Australia, who may be considered among the first of the 20th century's many mass-media, celebrity preachers. His movement is also said to be a precursor to the Pentecostal movement. Dowie founded Zion in 1900 as a religious community -- a rather closed and restrictive one. Frederick Elliott Randell and his family left Zion in 1910 to settle in Kansas City, Kansas,where he worked as a floorwalker in a department store. He and his wife later moved to a small farm near Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Carrie died there in 1942. Frederick Elliott died in Kansas City in 1957.
