Summary

John Martins on the Western corner of Rundle Street and Charles Street. Printed from a copy made from a lantern slide made in August 1933. John Martin and Company Limited was housed in a two storey building with the lower windows displaying their wares. The people in the street wearing the fashions of the day are of interest. Horses and carriages are awaiting business. Tram lines travelling along Rundle Street can be seen.

Historical information

Colin Ballantyne was born 12 July 1908 Wayville, South Australia, and died 2 July 1988. A theatre director, actor, playwright, leader, administrator and commercial photographer, he directed around 100 productions covering a wide range of classical and contemporary works between 1931-1971. He also directed the major local drama component of the first five Adelaide Festivals; and founded or helped build companies like the WEA Little Theatre, the Adelaide Theatre Group at the Sheridan Theatre and the Company of Players. Ballantyne was a state and federal president of the Arts Council and the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the State Theatre Company of South Australia from 1972-1978; when he became the Chairman of the Performing Arts Collections of South Australia he guided its development on a daily basis.
