Summary

The sending station of the aerial ropeway at the Lake MacDonnell gypsum field that operated from 1926-1930 between there and the Kowulka (mis-spelled on the image), a siding on the railway line to Penong, Eyre Peninsula. The photograph was taken in 1930, soon after the ropeway was closed.

Historical information

Australian Gypsum Ltd. closed and amalgamated with the Peninsula Plaster Company and Victor Electric Plaster Mills to form Waratah Gypsum Pty. Ltd. in 1930. After the owner, Australian Gypsum Ltd, amalgamated with its competitor Peninsula Plaster Company and Victor Electric Plaster Mills Pty Ltd, the new company (named Waratah Gypsum Pty Ltd) decided to concentrate operations at Stenhouse Bay and virtually closed down the Lake MacDonnell operations for the next 20 years. In April 1950 the South Australian Railways (SAR) opened a new railway line from the gypsum field to Kowulka and production increased significantly. By 1966 the lightly constructed line was decrepit and the SAR opened a new, more direct line to the port of Thevenard. It remains operational as of 2023.
