Summary

An opened page from a copy of a newspaper, featuring a print produced from an engraving. The image depicts a cricket match in play with a view of the oval and spectators. The caption at the top of the page reads, '266[p] - The Illustrated London News, Sept.2, 1882 - 267[p]'. The caption at the bottom of the page reads 'The Cricket-Match, Australia v. England, at Kennington Oval. From an instantaneous photograph'. Match assumed to have taken place on the 28th & 29th August 1882. Kennington Oval has become known simply as 'The Oval'. The result of the match led to the famous obituary mourning the death of English cricket and heralded the start of the Ashes.
