18th/23rd Light Horse undergoing training at Gawler in April 1931. Photograph shows the section chosen to compete for the Hutton trophy. The action shot captures soldiers of the Light Horse Regiment galloping at speed, spearing filled sacks on the ground with their swords.

Historical information

Information provided by Colonel Steve Larkins: This is post WW1 [as shown by the fact that] the men are wearing ceremonial pugarees on their hats and are armed with sabres and carrying out a form of 'tent-pegging' which is normally done with lances. The WW1 Light Horse was only armed with sabres at the very end in late 1918. Up until that time, and famously at Beersheba, they carried their drawn bayonets. The Light Horse were not cavalry in the classic sense - they were mounted infantry.
