Summary

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of the subject in seven eighths view. He wears a jacket, waistcoat and cravat and has a trimmed beard, wide sideburns and moustache. He occupied various senior colonial civil service posts in the British Empire until being appointed Governor of Queensland in January 1875. He held this position for two years before becoming acting Governor of South Australia. He resigned after only eight weeks due to ill-health. [Caption on photograph] ' William Wellington Cairns, KCMG, Governor of South Australia / Stayed six months'.
