General notes

A handwritten 'Description of this Painting' is with the artwork, but the information is considered to be unreliable. It reads 'At the top of the site, it will be seen that a red brick church, was erected the first church built in the City of Adelaide at that time. It was consecrated under the name of St John. The pulpit at the time I left Adelaide in 1866 was occupied by the most eleoquent preacher at that time in Adelaide by the name the Revd Mr Ibbetson. The reserve on which the Church was erected was called the East Park Lands - In the centre of the area, a very extensive acreage, the Annual Races were held, and at certain times the Volunteer Military Force Reviews. In this force I had the honor of holding an Officers Commission. In the foreground of the picture, there used to be a strong running creek in the forties, and on this, to the left was erected the first water mill by a Dr Kent holding some considerable property in the neighbourhood. This Estate is now known as Kent Town - and at the present time forms a fashionable Suburb. The old Mill was pulled down in or about 1850, the creek dried up gradually from want of rain and became practically useless for the purpose originally intended'.
