Summary

ALBUM: Photograph albums which belonged to the South Australian missionary, Lilla Lashmar, showing part of the life of the Anglican New Guinea Mission in Papua, 1929-1936. Album B 56981/1 (1929-1933), Album B 56981/2 (1933-1936). Photographs in Album 1 include mission buildings at Dogura and people attending mission conferences, indigenous people, including children, and Papua scenery. Lilla Lashmar and other mission staff were executed by the Japanese on Buna Beach in 1942.

Historical information

Research by a staff member has established that volume 1 was donated to the State Library by the Anglican Parish of Prospect, S.A. A stained glass window with a Cross of Sacrifice at St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church commemorates Lilla Lashma. The cross in the window was a gift of the Japanese Anglican Church concerning martyrdom of Australian Missionaries at the hands of Japanese soldiers.
