Summary

GENERAL: A member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of South Australia sitting holding a large clock set at six o'clock; two men stand behind her. It has been suggested the woman in this picture is actually Mrs. Helen Barton, a Scottish Temperance worker who was invited to Australia to assist in the Campaign for 6 o'clock closing. Historical information

The man on the left is Rev. Charles E. Schafer, on the right is James Marion and in front is Mrs Helen Barton. The three were actively involved in the 'Six o'clock closing' campaign, and in Temperance campaigning over many years. Newspaper reports show that they mostly worked together in the cause during 1915 (see 'The Advertiser', Tuesday 30th March 1915). It is therefore likely that this photo dates from 1915. Rev. Schafer was described as "the fighting parson" (see 'The Sydney Morning Herald', 29th July 1910). Mrs Barton was described as "the queen of Scottish orators" ('Portland Guardian', Friday 13th April 1917). Information supplied by researcher Trish Small.
