Historical information

John Rymill was born in Penola in 1905; he learnt many skills while growing up on his father's farm, Old Penola Estate; his carpentry skills enabled him to repair and make airworthy the two crashed Tiger Moth aeroplanes on the Greeland British Arctic Air Route Expedition; attended Melbourne Grammar School; went to London and undertook the Survey and Navigation course conducted by the Royal Geographical Society; studied Anthropology at London University in order to understand Inuit Culture; spent time in the European Alps to study snow and ice conditions; in 1928 gained the British Ministry's Licence 1611, qualifying him to fly all types of flying machines; prepared for Greenland at the Scott Polar Research Institute; joined the Cambridge University's Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology Expedition to Northern Canada; was appointed surveyor and pilot to the British Arctic Air Route Expedition to East Greenland (1930-1931) and the meteorological and survey work on the Pan American Airways (1932-1933); received from King George Vth the British Service Polar Medal in silver with the Arctic Bar for his work in Greenland.
