Summary

[General description] The path in the foreground leads the eye through formal gardens to the front of the Lunatic Asylum building. Situated on the corner of Hackney and Botanic Roads this symmetrical stone building was erected in 1851 in the English Tudor revival style. It features four gables, the two in the centre being stepped. It has lattice windows, a slate roof and timber verandahs. The architect is thought to be William Bennet Hayes. The main buildings were demolished in 1938. [On front of photograph] 'Lunatic Asylum, Hackney' [On back of photograph] Several comments typed and written: '1869 / Looking north / See also Album B 39362 / For site see C226 / Building demolished in 1938'.
