Summary

[General description] Grenfell Street buildings form a backdrop for this view of the crowd that has come to see the official opening of Adelaide's electric tram system. At 2.30 pm on March 9th, 1909, a procession of fourteen tramcars (carrying seven hundred passengers) led by tram No 1 left Hackney Depot travelling to Gurrs Road, Kensington. As the Premier, Mr T Price was very ill, Mrs Price officially drove the decorated leading tram under the Chief Engineer Mr Goodman's guidance. The procession travelled to Grenfell St and then reversed direction to return to Hackney Depot.
