Historical information

Horace Percy Finnis was born on 17 April 1883 at Claremont, Clarence, Tasmania, eldest child of (C. of E.) Rev. Herbert Robert Finnis and Augusta Felicia Finnis (nee Percy). He was educated in Tasmania and then at Brighton Grammar and Trinity College (Univeristy of Melbourne), Victoria. As well as becoming an Anglican priest, he was described as 'an exceptional pianist'. He married violinist (Marion) Dora Barrow on 11 October 1909 in Brighton, Victoria. The photo in the SLSA was taken about the time (1918) the Finnis family moved to S.A. from Victoria where H.P. Finnis had previously been an Anglican priest. In 1933 he founded, in Adelaide, the first branch of the School of English Church music in Australia (later renamed the Royal School of Church Music) and he was precentor and organist of St Peter's Cathedral as well as teaching music at Pulteney Grammar. He was father of Maurice Meredith Steriker Finnis (a senior lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Adelaide). Marion Dora Finnis died in 1944 and H.P. Finnis subsequently married Dorothy Margaret McKell (Molly) Simpson. He died in South Australia in 1960. (Information supplied by a researcher).
