Historical information

A researcher has provided the following information: This is the Keyneton Lutheran Church. Three acres of land was given in 1857 by Mr. Henry Evans of 'Evandale' to the German community to establish, when needed, a chapel and schoolhouse, ministers' and teachers' houses, and gardens for the German congregation as well as a cemetery for the use of all local residents. The first church building was erected to the right of this building and dedicated by Pastor A. Kavel in 1855. The foundation stone of the new Lutheran Church, seen in this photograph, was laid on 20 September 1865. The cost of the Church was 626 punds/12 shillings/six pence. When the new church was built, the Lutheran Day School (established 1855) was moved into the old church building. The children in the photograph would be pupils of the Lutheran Day School, which was closed in 1912.
