Historical information

Lieutenant Harold James Copley was born at Black Rock, South Australia, on 9 September 1887. He enlisted in the 3rd light Horse Regiment on 3 December 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Promoted to the rank of Colonel he was appointed to command the 6th Cavalry Brigade in 1926. He held several positions including chairman of the SA Stock Salesman's Association, manager of the stock department of Elder Smith & Co. Ltd., President of the Naval and Military Club, Deputy Commander of the S.A. Volunteer Defence Corps, chairman of the S.A. Department of Information and a director of the Liberal Club. He was awarded the OBE, military division, in the 1940 Birthday Honours for distinguished army service and for the next two years was ADC to the Governor-General. He died at his residence in Dutton Terrace, Medindie, South Australia, 29 September 1947.
