General notes

David Wylie was the master of Tranmere School 1838 - 1853. His father (David Stewart Wylie) moved from Scotland to Liverpool when David was only 2 or 3 because he objected to signing the Covenant which was still required of all Presbyterian ministers. Young David received an excellent education from his parents at home in Liverpool, and also became an accomplished violinst. Like his father, he attended Glasgow University 1815-1818 and set up his own Classical Academy when he returned from Glasgow. He was Secretary of the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society from 1824 to 1837. David and his wife Elizabeth Little arrived in SA in May 1838 on board the ship 'Canton' which sailed from Gravesend in January 1838.
