General notes

John Horsnell arrived in South Australia on the 'Lysander', July 6 1839, he was quarantined for two weeks following smallpox which he had developed during the voyage. In 1841 he was employed at the Government Farm at Belair and in 1842 acquired the property 'Wood Vale'. In 1844 he became Dr. Penfold's gardener and planted vines; his marriage to Elizabeth, a maidservant on the Penfold's domestic staff, took place at St. John's Church, Halifax Street, Adelaide in 1848. He ceased working for Dr. Penfold in 1856, living on the proceeds of rents that he received as a landowner; he is buried at St. George's cemetery, Magill.
