Summary

These are 2 duplicate photographs. [General description] A man leans against a post and rail fence that surrounds the tree, probably a Coolibah, that was nearest the site of Burke's death. Emblazoned on the trunk are the initials R.O.H.B. and the date 21/9/61, that of his burial by Howitt's party. The remains were later exhumed and taken to the Melbourne Cemetery, Victoria, where they were buried, along with those of William John Wills, at a State funeral on January 21, 1863. [On back of photograph 1] 'Burke's Tree. / 1889. / This tree is on the Innamincka Run, in South Australia. Burke was temporarily buried at this spot' {On back of photograph 2] 'Burke's tree- the burial place of Robert O'Hara Burke, the explorer. Coopers Creek 1901'.
