Summary

Boer War Troops. According to the South Australian Boer War Association 'This photograph was taken at Adelaide Oval on the afternoon of Sunday 31 March 1902, three days before the 6th South Australian Imperial Bushmen, a small top-up contingent of 11 officers and 127 NCOs and men, was due to sail for South Africa. In the morning the men had marched to the cathedral for a farewell service at which Rev. Poole preached, and then to nearby Adelaide Oval where they were enthusiastically received at the bicycle sports. 'When they were about to leave,' the Register said on Monday 1 April, 'the men were drawn up in front of the grand stand, and at the call of Capt. Cornish three cheers were given for the League of Wheelmen' shortly before or after the photograph was taken. That evening, the Naval and Military Club hosted the contingent's officers while the the NCOs and rank and file attended a performance at the Tivoli theatre courtesy of management. However, this photograph appeared in "The Chronicle" of 1 March 1902 labelled "Officers and men of the Seventh Contingent". This contingent departed for South Africa on 20 February 1902, so the photo was taken prior to their departure, and it is at Jubilee Oval (not Adelaide Oval). Corporal McBean is in the photograph, and a list of the officers and men is provided in the "Evening Journal" of 19 February 1902.
