Summary

A camel dray and drilling rig at Kerba Station, men and kangaroo dogs in the foreground. [Information supplied by H. Law:] This photograph depicts Robert George LAW (known as George) on the left and his brother Verdun Ross LAW (known as Ross) at Kerba Station, Bookabie, South Australia. Both Robert George (b.4 October 1910 d. June 1980) and Verdon Ross (b.9 September 1917 d.5 December 1960) were born on Kerba Station, sons of Robert LAW and Ellen LAW (nee Parsons). Kerba Station covered some 33,000 acres. Robert George Law was a highly respected Justice of the Peace. George was fluent in the dialect of the local Aborigines, and was considered an 'initiated' man, thereby being privy to local tribal culture ('secret men's business). The drilling rig was used to bore a small hole - if good water was found then a well was dug in that location. Robert Law Snr came from the Yankalilla/Torrens Vale district where water was found mainly found on the tops and sides of hills, but discovered that at Bookabie the water was always found on the flats.
