Summary

[General description] This is a photograph of one Victoria Mining Company Share dated October 1st, 1846. South Australia's first recognised discovery of gold was at Castambul in January 1846 where the Victoria Gold Mining Company held 147 acres. Some very promising specimens were found there which resulted in an enormous increase in the value of its shares. The excitement was short-lived as the mine failed to live up to expectations. Castambul gold was made into a brooch for Queen Victoria and samples were displayed at the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace in 1851.
