Historical information

The men with the tongs are handling the red hot rivets which have probably been heated in what appears to be a small furnace in the background. Once the hot rivet is inserted in its hole from one side, the other end is hammered over to prevent it slipping out. Rivets were typically one inch in diameter and inserted in drilled holes and were used to join members before the advent of welding in the 1930s. The photo shows hot rivets, rather than pop-rivets which are much smaller and used mainly for sheet metal, not structural steel.
