Historical information

Walter Hayward was born 5 December 1843 at Echunga, son of John Hayward (1808-1872) and Katurah Margaret nee Reid (1813-1897). He left the Echunga district ca.1860 and moved to Moonta where he worked as a miner for a few years before becoming a wood cutter, supplying timber to the mines. He married Sophia Jane Corner on 5 December 1965 at Moonta. In the early 1870s he took up 'settler's rights' on Section 250, hundred of Kadina, and subsequently purchased sections 251, 252 and 253. He was active in the Cuncliffe community serving on church and other committees. He passed away on 16 January 1916. Albert James Hayward (1869-1951) who never married, was an enthusiastic photographer and was probably responsible for this photograph. [Information supplied by great grandson Malcolm Bridges.].
