Summary

Mr. C. M. Hambidge with obelisk on border of South Australia and Western Australia. : This is the Deakin Obelisk near Deakin on the trans continental railway. An almost identical Obelisk, the Kimberley Obelisk was built in 1927, after the 1921 determinations that Hambidge took part in at Deakin and in the Kimberley on the NT/WA border. In May 1921, when the SA Government Astronomer, Dodwell and the WA Government Astronomer, Curlewis along with Hambidge and others used wireless time signals from Bordeaux and Lyons in France, Annapolis, USA, Greenwich as well as Applecross, WA and from the SA Observatory to determine their position east of Greenwich. They travelled to Deakin SA/WA border then by ship to Wyndham, WA to WA/NT border. Information supplied by Andrew Barker of the Kununurra Historical Society.
